To us who are owned by a Jack Russell Terrier, they are all hero`s !  These brave and fearless little big dogs are known for their inability to accept that anything or anyone is too much to take on, they have hearts like lions !

 

Some very famous Jack Russell Terriers .

 

TRUMP

 

It is said that Parson John Russell of Swimbridge, Devon , bought his first terrier from a milkman in Marston Oxfordshire where he was studying between 1815-1819 .

Naming her Trump , she was to become the ancestor to these legendary terriers that we know today.

A painting of Trump , commissioned by the then Price of Wales, later Edward V11  still hangs at Sandringham today .

 

CHALKY

 

The famous side kick to TV chef and restaurant owner Rick Stein , Chalky was born in 1989 on a farm near to Padstow in Cornwall .

He accompanied Rick on countless television shows and series, proving to be such a character that many thousand tuned in just to watch Chalky !

Always the family dog, Chalky was loved by all and remained active and healthy until the last six months of his life .

Chalky died on January 13th 2007 , a bronze statue of him can be seen at the entrance to Rick Steins restaurant in Padstow .

 

 

NIPPER

 

Nipper was born in Bristol in 1884 and belonged to Mark Henry Barraud  who died in 1887, leaving Nipper in the care of his two brothers .

Nipper died in 1895 and was buried in a small park at Kingston –upon- Thames . A Lloyds TBS building now occupies the site but a brass plaque commemorates Nipper today .

Three years after  his death , one of the two brothers, Francis Barraud painted a portrait of Nipper listening to a wind up Edison phonograph hoping that the company may be interesting in purchasing the painting but they showed no interest in it !

Eventually the Gramophone Company bought the image on condition that the artist replace the machine with a Berliner gramophone , after which , the modified painting became the trademark of the company . selling for £100 .

 Nipper continues to be the famous mascot for the company and real dogs now play his part in advertising !

A huge four ton statue of Nipper can be seen on the roof of the old RTA building on Broadway .

In Bristol where Nipper lived with his owner in the Prince`s Theatre, there is a small model of the dog over the doorway of the building .

 It is claimed that Nipper was a Jack Russell Terrier and was so named because of his tendancy to nip people in the leg !

 

LEO

 

In Melbourne Australia October 2008 , a family house fire threatened the occupants who all fled the blaze . Once outside in safety , it was realised that Leo , the family pet and Jack Russell Terrier was missing  and despite calls, he refused to leave the burning home .

When firefighters entered the house, they discovered Leo next to and guarding a box containing several very young kittens . Leo had lost consciousness and stopped breathing . However , he was revived and survived as did all the kittens . Leo became a national hero .

 

GEORGE

In 2007 in New Zealand , George the Jack Russell Terrier became a hero when he purposely placed himself between five children and a Pitt Bull Terrier which was attacking them .Sadly his fearlessness proved to be his downfall as the Pitt Bull savagely mauled George who had to be put to sleep .

 

PICKLE

In Hampshire July 2008 , Pickle an eleven year old Jack Russell Terrier jumped in between a toddler and a two foot adder . His intervention gave the childs Granny the opportunity to snatch the little one out of the danger of a potentially fatal bite . Pickle was bitten instead but following immediate treatment, he made a full recovery .
